enquries and appeals

The IAM aims to ensure that all decisions affecting centres and learners are processed fairly in order to produce reliable and valid judgements. Despite this there may be incidents when IAM assessment decisions are questioned. This document describes the procedures that IAM have in place in order to allow learners and centres to enquire about assessment results. The document also describes the appeals procedures that IAM has in place should a learner or centre be unhappy about the outcome of any enquiry.

Please click on the link below to download the IAM Enquiries and Appeals procedures. The document includes the appropriate forms that will need to be completed for any enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I enquire about my result(s)?

A. If you are studying at an IAM accredited centre or learning provider, you must inform your centre which exam result(s) you wish to enquire about, and agree with your centre which form of enquiry to pursue. In all cases you must submit a completed Candidate Consent Form (Form P1) to your centre. The head of the centre will then submit this, together with the appropriate application form, to the IAM.

If you are an independent student, you must complete both the Candidate Consent Form and the appropriate application form, and submit them to the IAM.

Q. I am dissatisfied with my exam result. Should I apply for a re-mark?

A. The IAM advises all centre-based candidates to consult with their centre before deciding on a specific form of enquiry. However, the decision ultimately rests with the candidate. Nevertheless, candidates should be aware that every paper is marked by an impartial examiner who is an expert in their field. The IAM marking is also subject to a comprehensive system of standardisation and moderation, designed to ensure accuracy and fairness in the awarding of all marks.

The result of any re-mark is extremely unlikely to vary by more than a few percentage points from the original mark awarded. Therefore in some cases an alternative form of enquiry is likely to be of greater benefit to the candidate. For example, a Copy of Marked Assessment or Counselling Report may well be preferable, as these services enable the candidate to understand the examiner’s reasons for giving the original mark.

Q. Can my mark go down as well as up?

A. Yes. The outcome of the enquiry supersedes the original mark awarded. Therefore the mark can potentially go down, as well as going up or remaining the same.

Q. How much time do I have to enquire about my result(s)?

A. For Clerical Re-checks, the IAM must receive the application from the centre or independent candidate within 10 working days of the publication of results. For all other enquiries, the IAM must receive the application within 50 working days of the publication of results.

Q. How long does an enquiry take to complete?

A. The IAM understands the importance to candidates and centres of obtaining a swift resolution to any enquiry. We operate to strict, self-imposed delivery targets for each form of enquiry or appeal. These targets can be found in the IAM Enquiries and Appeals Procedures document.

Due to the tight schedule for exam entries, which is necessary in enabling the IAM to deliver four exam series per year, we cannot guarantee that any enquiry will be completed before the exam entry deadline for the next exam series. Therefore we would advise all centre-based candidates to consult with their exam centre before deciding to enquire about a result.

If a candidate does decide to enquire, then both the candidate and the centre should be prepared not to re-enter for the unit which is subject to enquiry until the enquiry has been completed (with the exception of Copy of Marked Assessment applications).

Q. How much does it cost to enquire about my result(s)?

A. The IAM charges a fee for each form of enquiry which reflects the costs incurred in processing that enquiry. Fees for all forms of enquiry are listed in the IAM Enquiries and Appeals Procedures document.

If a candidate or centre appeals against the outcome of any enquiry, and that appeal is successful, then the IAM will refund the appeal fee.
