Completion of a Self SWOT Analysis

This is intended to help you carry out some initial thinking about your strengths and weaknesses. In addition you will need to think about possible directions for your career development. Don't be tempted to rush this stage.

Personal Development Plan

Development of your PDP is based upon your SWOT Analysis. Its purpose is to assist you to formulate a set of development activities covering a period of one year. Long term career plans should cover development activities for the next twelve months in the light of your intentions over the next three years.

Implementation

Implementing your plan does not imply that you cannot or should not change it once implementation is under way. Situations and circumstances can and do change. New opportunities and different threats do arise that could not have been foreseen. Your plan should be regularly reviewed and changes made in the light of recent events, preferably in conjunction with your manager or mentor.

Development Diary

It is vital that you record your efforts and assess the benefits of your planned activities. The activities you undertake may not always generate the results you wanted. Time spent reflecting on how you tackled each activity and in assessing the outcomes will enable you to adjust your PDP for the following year. Moreover, by recording your activities you are building a complete record of your professional and personal development that can form the basis for long term career development.

Annual Review

At the end of the twelve month period, having reviewed your activities you are required to complete the Summary Sheet. The process is repeated for the second and subsequent years by reviewing and updating the SWOT Analysis and then drawing up a new PDP and so on.
