iam Commendation

In 1989 it was proposed that the iam awards system be revised to include a second award of a Certificate of Commendation to acknowledge distinguished service to the iam. The iam Council approved this and the first Certificate of Commendation was awarded in 1990. The most recent recipients of the Certificate of Commendation are:

Malcolm Howell MInstAM

Malcolm Howell has a long career spanning a period in the forces, then as an engineer at all levels, and ultimately as a manager in manufacturing. Later he moved into education as a lecturer, and then as a Senior Manager in Education. Small wonder that he has been such a supportive and ideal member of the iam.

Having retired early, in 1991, Malcolm realised he needed some additional activity to keep him busy. He wrote to the iam in 1992, and was invited for a short chat. 2 hours later, he was asked to start immediately and to produce his first case study in 2 weeks.

For the last 10 years, Malcolm has been writing two case studies, twice a year, as Chief Examiner for the Diploma and Advance Diploma Case Studies.

He has also been an active participant in the National Student Workshop, has involved himself in Tutor's conferences, been an examiner for distance learning, written for Student Advisor in 'Manager' a past member of the iam Education Committee and several task groups such as Syllabus Review Working Party. This level of commitment and constant participation in the iam explain why Malcolm has been chosen to receive this honour today.

Doreen Osuch FInstAM

Doreen joined the iam over 20 years ago in 1980, having first been a member of the Information / Word Processing Association.

Doreen was a Head of Department at the University of Lincoln when the BA (Hons) Administrative Management degree was developed with the iam. She was involved in the development of the programme, the production of distance learning materials for students, and recently acted as Academic Operations Manager responsible for managing this programme.

In 1986 she became a member of the Education Committee, and since 1996 has been a Chief Examiner for the institute.

She has been a contributor to 'Manager', and active in Tutors conferences and Student Workshops

As from this year Doreen has also been appointed to the QAAB - Quality Assurance and Assessment Board.

Doreen's current roles also include part-time lecturing (in the UK and overseas) and Academic Director managing a collaborative MBA Executive Programme for the University of Hull.

Doreen is being honoured today not only for her active and invaluable participation in so many iam areas, but for the way she has maintained her enthusiasm and commitment for over 20 years, making her a very valued recipient of this award.

Maurice Westcott MInstAM

Maurice Westcott first heard of the iam in 1978, when he became involved with the iam East Midlands Branch.

He was instrumental in instituting a regional student seminar, which was a forerunner to the popular National Student Workshop.

In 1980 he became involved with the examinations, as a Member of the Institute. As in his working life, where he was a Senior Lecturer for 28 years at NTU, his contribution to the iam has at all times been supportive of, and invaluable to the Institute.

His smooth, calm and professional attitude, have been a great help - very much appreciated in today's busy and chaotic world. He has now retired but continues marking and examining, maintaining his links with the iam.

In his personal life, too, he is much respected in his local community. He is the Chairman of his local rambling club. He has taken up painting. He also organises (and participates in) runs and cycle rides, in aid of Cancer Research and Leukaemia.
