iam Awards

The iam Commendation, iam Medal and iam Vice Presidency are awarded to acknowledge outstanding service to the Administrative Management profession and /or the iam.

iam Medal

The iam Medal was first introduced in 1977. To date over 100 iam Medals have been awarded to Institute Members in recognition of exceptional service to the iam.

The most recent iam Medal recipients are:

Ken Armitage FInstAM

Ken is a former senior executive Royal Navy Seaman Executive Officer with a background in the general management of radio communications and telecommunications systems, equipment, networks and manpower.

The pinnacle of his naval career was serving in the MOD as Director (Network Operations) with responsibility for the management and operations of the Navy's global telecommunications network and strategic broadcast systems.

He is also a Member of the Communications Management Association, the Chartered Management Institute, the Nautical Institute and MENSA although he professes not to be a 'brainiac'.

He joined the institute in 1989 and because of his interest and writing on general management and administrative issues, was invited to join the Council in 1997. Ken believes passionately in the iam and is constantly proclaiming its value and encouraging membership to people he comes in to contact with.

Ken was heavily involved in establishing the iam website and the interactive pages and is now Moderator of the Learning Resource Centre pages of the new iam website.

He was also Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board, and still contributes regularly to "Manager".

George Owenson FInstAM(AdvDip)

George Owenson is being recognised today for his association with the iam, during which time he has been a supportive and active member, in many different ways.

He originally heard of the iam in the 1970s, when he studied and gained membership of the iam to facilitate his transition from military service to civilian administration.

This acknowledgement was recognition of 12 years on Council including 3 years as Chair of Education and 8 years Chair of Admissions Board. He retired in 2000 from the position of Support Services Manager with the City of Edinburgh Council.

He became a Member of the Institute in 1974 and has been a Fellow since 1990. He joined the Council in 1996. He is also former chairman of the Edinburgh & East of Scotland Branch.

In 1989 it was proposed that the iam awards system be revised to include a second award of a Certificate of Commendation to acknowledge distinguished service to the iam.
